Evaluation: Roles - VFX Supervisor
VFX Supervisor:
As a VFX supervisor I had some weight in how shots could look visually. At the beginning what I could contribute was quite a lot as I had to research the possibilities if what we could do and what we couldn't do. Tutorials was everything at the beginning. When we decided to use blender as our main source of 3D.
Tutorials were everything. I had never used Blender before in my life and I wanted to learn it. And I did learn it.
A good VFX Supervisor should know the functionality of the software used during the production.
During the middle of production I was stuck with nothing to do in this particular field. Mainly because 3D at the time was being particularly slow in pumping out anything. Most of my time was trying to figure out if the Crumb Shot could be done with 3D. and to a degree could of been possible to create the shot until the real reference was told to me quite late in the production (Don't know why it wasn't told to me earlier).
If I had a separate team working on VFX I think we could of spent more time on any of the 3D VFX, that includes the Fluid Sim shots, Fake water sim, Clouds and The Crumb Shot. But because we are a small class, all of the VFX team were also Asset Modelers and understandably had to make sure that that was finished first.
It was also a bummer that two people in my team were not very good at communicating with me to say where they were in regard of VFX, most of the time it was me asking them first or me hearing off hand what they were up to. The After Effects VFX worked real well, and I'm glad that Thomas stepped in to help in that. I'm sad that we didn't have a lot of time to work on the AE VFX. I'll reference this more when I talk about Compositing.
Aside form that I reflect that I did a good job as VFX supervisor as in the end the shots got done, they looked good and we managed to tick off the VFXs shots needed for the film.
